Series and Parallel Circuits

Current and Potential Difference in Series Circuits

Current has the same value at any point in a single closed loop of a circuit, so the current through each component is the same. But the potential difference is shared between the components in a series circuit.

Current and Potential Difference in Parallel Circuits

In a parallel circuit the total current through the whole circuit is the sum of the currents through the separate loops, while the potential difference is the same across each loop in the circuit.

Resistors in Series and Parallel

When resistors are added in series their total resistance increases, while in parallel the total resistance decreases.
