Our Sun is a very average sized star, but it won't continue to shine forever. All stars go through a life cycle, becoming a red giant before slowly fading away as a white dwarf.

Really massive stars have a shorter life time as they use up their fuel so quickly. When they die it is in dramatic fashion with a super nova and possibly even a black hole.

Fusion in Stars

Nuclear fusion releases energy when small nuclei join (fuse) together. In a star there are ideal conditions for this to happen with the extremely high temperatures and pressures.
